Former Matungu MP David Were is mourning after the tragic death of his son, Hanington Were, who was attacked and killed in Kisumu during the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to the former lawmaker, Hanington had left his house together with a friend shortly after midnight on May 24 when they were attacked by two men riding on a motorcycle at around 1 a.m. Reports indicate that the attackers stabbed him before escaping from the scene.
Speaking after the incident, David Were said he received information that his son had been rushed to the hospital but unfortunately died from the injuries.
“I was informed that he had been taken to the hospital, but sadly, he did not survive. Doctors told me he had stab wounds on his back,” the former MP said.
Witnesses said the attack happened near Robert Owuko Estate in Kisumu. Residents reported that the suspects arrived on a motorbike, carried out the attack, and quickly escaped.
News of Hanington’s death spread quickly on Sunday morning, attracting many shocked residents to the area as police officers began investigations.
His body was later moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary as detectives launched a manhunt for the attackers.
The incident has once again raised concerns over increasing insecurity in Kisumu, especially cases of violent robbery and attacks happening at night.
Several residents blamed the rise in crime on criminal gangs working together with some boda boda riders to target innocent people.
“There is a serious security problem in Kisumu. Some criminals are using boda bodas to carry out attacks in different estates,” one resident said.
Locals also complained about poor street lighting in areas around Robert Owuko Estate, Mountain View, and Kore, saying darkness at night has made it easier for criminals to operate.
Residents are now calling on the Kisumu County Government and security agencies to improve security and increase patrols in the affected areas.
David Were served as the Member of Parliament for Matungu Constituency between 2002 and 2017 under different political parties including Narc, ODM, and New Ford Kenya.
The former MP has now called for speedy investigations into his son’s killing and urged security officers to ensure those responsible are arrested.
