Govt to Promote 50,000 Teachers in Next Budget, Says DP Kindiki

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that the government plans to promote 50,000 teachers in the upcoming 2026/27 financial year budget.

Speaking during a Thanksgiving event for newly elected KUPPET Meru Branch Executive Secretary Njira Muthomi in Meru County, Kindiki said the government has allocated funds to improve teachers’ welfare.

According to the DP, the initial plan was to promote 25,000 teachers, but after discussions with teachers’ unions, the number was increased to 50,000.

“In the next budget, money has been set aside for teachers’ promotions. We first planned for 25,000 teachers, but after consultations, the government decided to raise the number to 50,000,” he said.

Kindiki noted that some teachers have remained in the same job group for more than 10 years, adding that the government is working to improve their working conditions.

He said the administration is focused on improving teachers’ terms of service and increasing the number of teachers to reduce workload in schools.

On healthcare, the Deputy President said concerns raised by teachers about the Social Health Authority (SHA) cover are being addressed.

He stated that the government wants teachers to access better medical packages to ensure they remain healthy while carrying out their duties.

Kindiki praised teachers for their commitment, saying they dedicate much of their time to shaping the future of children across the country.

Besides welfare improvements, the government said it has continued investing in the education sector through increased funding and infrastructure development.

According to the DP, the education budget has grown from KSh500 billion in 2022 to KSh765 billion in the next financial year.

He highlighted several achievements by the administration, including the hiring of 100,000 teachers since 2022, with another 20,000 expected to be employed soon.

The government has also built 23,000 classrooms and 1,600 laboratories across the country to improve the learning environment.

In the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, Kindiki said 3,300 tutors have been recruited to support growing student enrolment.

On Junior Secondary School (JSS), the DP said the government has received requests to make the system independent and consultations with stakeholders will continue before any final decision is made.
