Gachagua Says Ruto Will Get Less Than 5% Votes in Mt Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a fresh political attack on President William Ruto, claiming he will not get meaningful support from the Mt Kenya region in future elections.

Speaking during a rally in Kirinyaga on Saturday, March 28, Gachagua accused Ruto of betraying him and the Mt Kenya community following his impeachment in October 2024.

Fallout After Impeachment

Gachagua said the relationship between him and the president broke down after he was removed from office, blaming Ruto for allowing the impeachment process to go through.

He told supporters that, despite backing Ruto in the 2022 General Election, the president has now turned against the same region that helped him win power.

In the 2022 polls, Mt Kenya played a key role in Ruto’s victory, contributing millions of votes against his main rival, Raila Odinga, who had the support of former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Ruto Will Not Get 5%” – Gachagua

Gachagua strongly criticised Ruto for allegedly insulting the Mt Kenya community by calling them tribal.

He insisted that the region supported Ruto, knowing well he comes from a different community.

According to him, Ruto will struggle to get even a small percentage of votes from Mt Kenya in the next election.

“If he manages even 5% of votes from this region, then I will not be a man,” Gachagua declared.

Opposition Unity Talks

After his removal from government, Gachagua joined other leaders in the opposition as they prepared to challenge Ruto in the next election.

The opposition team includes leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, and Fred Matiang’i.

However, one major issue remains unresolved — who will be the coalition’s presidential candidate?

Gachagua Sets Conditions for Kalonzo

Gachagua said Kalonzo must prove his strength by delivering at least four million votes from the Ukambani region if he wants to be considered as the opposition flag bearer.

While praising Kalonzo’s leadership and clean record, Gachagua insisted that numbers will be key in defeating Ruto.

He noted that Ukambani voters are loyal and often follow Kalonzo’s direction, but urged them to register in large numbers to increase their voting power.

“Numbers Will Decide”

Gachagua emphasised that all leaders in the opposition must show their political strength.

He said figures like Wamalwa, Karua, and others must also prove they can mobilise votes before being given any leadership role.

Positioning himself as a major force in the opposition, Gachagua claimed he controls up to six million votes from the Mt Kenya region.

He added that combining support from different regions will be the only way to defeat President Ruto in the next General Election.
