How KUCCPS Determines University and College Placement Using Cluster Points

Thousands of Kenyan students who sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination eagerly wait for the opening of the KUCCPS placement portal each year. Once the portal is opened, candidates apply for their preferred university or college courses.

The placement process is managed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), the government body responsible for assigning students to higher education institutions based on their KCSE results.

A key factor that determines whether a student qualifies for a course is cluster points.

What Are Cluster Points?

Cluster points are numerical scores calculated from a student’s KCSE grades in specific subjects required for a particular course.

Every course has a defined group of subjects called a cluster. KUCCPS converts grades in these subjects into points and then totals them to determine eligibility.

KCSE grades are converted into points as follows:

  • A = 12

  • A- = 11

  • B+ = 10

  • B = 9

  • B- = 8

  • C+ = 7

  • C = 6

  • C- = 5

  • D+ = 4

  • D = 3

  • D- = 2

  • E = 1

Course Subject Clusters

Different courses require different subject combinations. For example:

  • Medicine and Health Sciences: English/Kiswahili, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics

  • Engineering and Architecture: English/Kiswahili, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Geography

  • Business Courses: English/Kiswahili, Mathematics, Business Studies

  • Social Sciences and Humanities: English/Kiswahili, Mathematics, History, Geography, Business Studies

These subject combinations form the basis of cluster point calculations.

How Cluster Points Are Calculated

To compute cluster points, KUCCPS adds the points from the best grades in the required subjects for a chosen course.

For example, if a student scores:

  • English: B+ (10 points)

  • Mathematics: A- (11 points)

  • Physics: B (9 points)

  • Chemistry: B+ (10 points)

  • Biology: B (9 points)

The total cluster points would be 49 points.

Minimum Cluster Points for Courses

KUCCPS sets minimum cluster points for each course based on demand and competitiveness.

  • Highly competitive courses like Medicine often require cluster points above 42.

  • Courses such as Education and Social Sciences may require around 36 points or more.

Students who fail to meet the minimum cluster points are not eligible for placement in those courses.

How KUCCPS Matches Students to Courses

KUCCPS uses a computerized system to place students based on:

  • Total cluster points

  • Course preferences selected by the student

  • Available slots in institutions

Students are allocated the highest-ranked course for which they qualify according to their cluster points.

Public universities in Kenya strictly follow KUCCPS placement decisions.

Private universities, however, may consider KUCCPS points but can also apply additional admission criteria such as interviews, aptitude tests, or higher minimum grades, in line with regulations from the Commission for University Education (CUE).

Strong performance in specific cluster subjects is crucial.

For instance, a student may have high overall points but still fail to qualify for Engineering if they score poorly in Physics. KUCCPS considers both total cluster points and minimum subject requirements.

Common Course Clusters in Kenya

Some of the most common clusters include:

  • Medicine and Health Sciences

  • Engineering and Architecture

  • Business and Economics

  • Social Sciences and Humanities

Each cluster has unique subject requirements that influence placement decisions.

University Placement Based on Clusters

During placement, KUCCPS groups universities based on course competitiveness and demand.

Top-performing students with high cluster points are matched to highly competitive universities and courses, while other students are placed in institutions with available spaces that match their academic performance.

This approach ensures fairness and maximizes opportunities for students across different institutions.

Appeals and Adjustments

KUCCPS allows students to request reconsideration if they qualify for a course but miss placement due to competition or errors in application details. Appeals must be submitted within the specified timelines.
