Kalonzo Musyoka has officially been appointed as the new leader of the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya coalition, marking a major shift in the coalition’s top leadership.
The decision was reached during a joint meeting of Azimio’s governing organs held on Monday, February 2, 2026. After the meeting, the coalition forwarded a formal notification of the leadership changes to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.
During the National Executive Council meeting, which was chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Suba Member of Parliament Carol Omondi was confirmed as the new Secretary General of the coalition. She replaces Junet Mohamed, who previously held the position.
According to documents submitted to the registrar, the coalition provided official minutes from the February 2 meeting, resolutions approving the leadership changes, and a statutory form outlining the new officials. A formal letter dated February 2, 2026, was also sent to Junet Mohamed, informing him of his removal from the Secretary General position.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Azimio described the changes as part of a broader strategy to strengthen and revitalise the coalition.
“These changes are intended to enhance unity, improve coordination, and increase the coalition’s effectiveness as it pursues its national agenda,” the statement read.
Following the submission, Registrar of Political Parties J.C. Lorionokou advised the coalition to publicly announce the leadership changes in line with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, which requires parties to formally publish any changes in their leadership structures.
Political analysts view Kalonzo Musyoka’s elevation as a strategic move aimed at providing clearer direction for the coalition while taking advantage of his long experience in Kenyan politics and coalition-building.
The leadership reshuffle comes at a sensitive time for Azimio, as the National Liberal Party (NLP), one of the coalition’s founding members, recently petitioned the Registrar of Political Parties seeking clarification on the coalition’s legal and operational status.
The changes also follow the resignation of Azimio’s Executive Director, Raphael Tuju, adding to the wave of restructuring within the coalition.
