The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chief Executive Officer, Marjan Hussein, has officially resigned from his position.
Marjan, who has served at the electoral commission since 2015, said his decision to leave the role came after wide consultations with senior officials within the commission. Although he did not give specific reasons for stepping down, he indicated that the move was agreed upon jointly with the top leadership of IEBC.
In a statement addressed to staff and commissioners, Marjan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve at the commission for over a decade. He praised colleagues for their professionalism and dedication, especially during the 2022 General Election and the period that followed.
“Since joining the commission in 2015, first as Deputy Commission Secretary and later as Chief Executive Officer, it has been a privilege to work with a committed and resilient team dedicated to fulfilling the constitutional mandate of IEBC,” he said.
During his tenure as CEO, Marjan oversaw the commission’s daily operations, including election management, human resource administration, and implementation of key policies.
The IEBC has confirmed his departure and announced that an interim CEO will be appointed soon. In its statement, the commission emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional readiness ahead of the next elections.
“The IEBC Secretariat plays a critical role in electoral management. The commission remains focused on ensuring preparedness, professionalism, and commitment to delivering credible, free, and fair elections in Kenya,” the statement read.
Marjan’s exit comes amid growing political pressure on the commission as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election. Recently, opposition leaders visited the IEBC offices and raised concerns they said required urgent attention.
During the visit, Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua openly questioned Marjan’s leadership, expressing doubts about his ability to steer the commission effectively.
