Kenyan Village Elders to Begin Earning Monthly Stipends Starting August

Village elders across Kenya will start receiving monthly allowances from August after the government introduced a new programme to recognise their work in local communities.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced on Friday during a public meeting in Rachuonyo North, Homa Bay County.

According to Omollo, village elders have served Kenyans for many years by helping maintain peace, resolving family and community disputes, supporting security efforts, and assisting in government programmes without receiving any regular payment.

He said the government has now decided to reward their service through a monthly allowance, with the first payments expected to begin in August.

“Village elders have continued to play an important role in our communities. It is time their efforts are recognised,” Omollo said.

Why the Government Is Introducing the Allowance

The Principal Secretary said village elders are an important connection between the government and local communities.

They help mobilise residents during government programmes, share important information, and support local administration during emergencies and community activities.

The government believes the monthly allowance will motivate them to continue serving their communities effectively.

While addressing residents, Omollo also spoke about development projects taking place in Homa Bay County.

He said more road projects are being implemented under the current administration compared to previous years.

The PS also encouraged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying it will help more Kenyans access affordable healthcare.

He added that young people are benefiting from the NYOTA programme, which offers skills training, business mentorship and financial support to help them start businesses.

Calls for National Dialogue

Omollo also welcomed President William Ruto’s recent call for national dialogue.

He urged Kenyans from all parts of the country to participate in the discussions and contribute ideas that can help improve the country’s future.

He said building a better Kenya requires everyone to work together.
