KRA Explains How Kenyans Can File Tax Returns Using Mobile Phones

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has confirmed that Kenyans can submit their tax returns via mobile phones, but this option is limited to certain cases.
KRA explained on X that only nil returns—tax returns showing no income or tax owed—can be filed using a mobile device. Taxpayers will need to wait until after March 31 before submitting nil returns on their phones.
“Filing nil returns on your phone is possible, but you must wait until after March 31,” KRA said in a statement.
However, the authority cautioned that those who are employed or running a business may find it difficult to file returns through mobile phones due to the more complex information required.
“If you are employed or have a business, filing your tax returns via mobile will be challenging,” KRA added.
This clarification came after a user asked KRA if mobile tax filing was possible. It arrives just as the annual tax season begins, with many Kenyans looking for easier ways to submit their returns.
KRA has also started sending SMS reminders to employed taxpayers, guiding them on how to file their returns faster. The messages, mostly sent on March 19, introduced a pre-filled return system, which automatically includes details of employment income.
This means salaried individuals no longer need to type in most of their income information manually when filing annual returns.
With the tax filing deadline set for June 30, KRA urges taxpayers to file early to avoid last-minute stress.
