List of Presidential Candidates Who Have Declared to Vie Against Ruto Come 2027

Kenya’s 2027 General Election may still be some time away, but the presidential race is already taking shape. Several political leaders have either openly declared their intention to challenge President William Ruto or taken clear steps that point to a 2027 bid.

President Ruto has confirmed he will seek a second term, setting the stage for a competitive contest as opposition figures and independent voices line up to face him.

Below is a list of leaders who have so far declared interest in the presidency or made strong moves towards a 2027 run.

Kalonzo Musyoka

Wiper Party leader and Azimio la Umoja co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka is among the earliest politicians to confirm his 2027 presidential ambitions. Kalonzo has stated that he will not back another candidate this time, unlike in previous elections.

His announcement signals a firm decision to pursue the presidency independently as he seeks national support ahead of the polls.

Okiya Omtatah

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has also indicated interest in the country’s top seat. In November 2024, he announced the formation of a Presidential Exploratory Committee to assess the viability of his candidacy.

Omtatah said the committee will engage citizens across the country, gather views on key national challenges, and determine whether his leadership agenda aligns with public expectations.

Fred Matiang’i

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i continues to be widely mentioned as a strong presidential contender, despite not making a formal public declaration.

Recent reports suggest Matiang’i is preparing quietly, including hiring an international lobbying firm to help position his campaign. His growing political activity has fuelled speculation that he is gearing up for a serious 2027 challenge against President Ruto.

Martha Karua

Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has also emerged as a possible presidential hopeful. Karua was Raila Odinga’s running mate in the last General Election and remains a key figure in Kenya’s opposition politics.

Her inclusion adds weight to the list of experienced leaders considering a run for the presidency.

Eugene Wamalwa

Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has officially declared his intention to vie for president in 2027. Speaking during a party meeting earlier this year, Wamalwa said his party had endorsed him as its presidential candidate.

He has since urged supporters to rally behind his bid as he works to build national support across counties.

Miguna Miguna

Senior lawyer Miguna Miguna is the latest figure to declare his 2027 presidential bid. Speaking during a live interview on TV47, Miguna confirmed that he will contest the presidency on what he described as a transformative and people-focused agenda.

Miguna said his leadership vision will prioritise integrity, accountability, and policies aimed at improving the lives of ordinary Kenyans.

ODM Still Undecided

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is yet to announce whether it will field a presidential candidate or join a coalition. Party leader Oburu Odinga has said that if the party goes solo, the presidential ticket will be held by the party leader. A final decision is expected before the end of 2026.

As political activity gains momentum, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has already started early preparations for the 2027 elections. These include voter registration plans and improvements aimed at ensuring a credible and transparent process.

With multiple leaders declaring interest, the 2027 presidential race is shaping up to be highly competitive. Key campaign issues are expected to include the economy, governance, corruption, and the cost of living.

As the election draws closer, how each candidate connects with voters and addresses national concerns will play a major role in determining who emerges as President Ruto’s main challenger.
