Senior lawyer Miguna Miguna has officially declared that he will run for President of Kenya in the 2027 General Election. The announcement was made during a live interview on TV47 on Wednesday evening.

Miguna said his campaign will be guided by a transformative and people-centred vision, aiming to place the interests of ordinary Kenyans at the heart of governance.

“I am going to contest the presidency of the Republic of Kenya in 2027 on a transformative vision. A vision that prioritizes the needs of the people as the foundation for moving the country forward,” he said.

The former Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant emphasized that his leadership approach will break away from current governance models, focusing on integrity and socialist-inspired policies rather than capitalism.

Miguna becomes the latest entrant in an already crowded field of presidential hopefuls. Other prominent figures considering a run include former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, former Chief Justice David Maraga, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, Eugene Wamalwa, and activist Boniface Mwangi.

Recent opinion polls show that Matiang’i, endorsed by the Jubilee Party, is leading in several key regions, setting up a potential contest against President William Ruto, who has confirmed he will seek a second term.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has already begun preparations for the 2027 polls, focusing on voter registration and refining electoral procedures to ensure a credible election. Civil society and political parties continue to engage with the commission to enhance transparency and public confidence.

Meanwhile, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is yet to decide whether to field its own candidate or form a coalition with the ruling UDA. ODM leader Oburu Oginga said that if the party goes solo, its presidential candidate will be the party leader. A formal decision is expected before the end of 2026.

Despite some public dissatisfaction, the Kenya Kwanza coalition has recorded notable wins in recent by-elections, boosting President Ruto’s support base ahead of the 2027 race.
