NTV Uganda Moves Online After Military Raid on Kampala Offices

NTV Uganda has moved its operations to digital platforms after security officers raided its offices in Kampala early on Sunday, June 28.
The broadcaster’s parent company, Nation Media Group Uganda (NMG-U), said its offices remain closed, but it will continue sharing news through its online platforms.
According to the company, the raid happened at around 1:00 am and caused a major disruption to its TV, radio, and newspaper operations.
Armed security officers reportedly entered the company’s offices in Kampala’s Industrial Area and also closed another NMG office at the Kampala Serena International Conference Centre.
Electricity at both locations was switched off, forcing NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Daily Monitor, KFM, and Dembe FM to stop broadcasting.
Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, later confirmed the shutdown through social media posts. He said the media houses would remain closed until he allowed them to reopen.
The army chief also claimed that his office should first approve negative stories about Uganda before publication.
General Muhoozi further said President Yoweri Museveni supported the decision to shut down the media outlets.
The move has raised concerns about media freedom in Uganda, where journalists have previously complained about intimidation and restrictions while doing their work.
Uganda is ranked 143rd out of 180 countries in Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index, highlighting the challenges journalists face in the country.
Despite the shutdown of its offices, NTV Uganda has assured its viewers and readers that it will continue providing updates through its digital channels as the situation develops.
