Oburu Odinga Asked to Take Action After Sifuna Joins Gachagua at Murang’a Burial

Edwin Sifuna Sparks Talk After Appearing with Gachagua at Murang’a Burial

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has set tongues wagging after attending a burial alongside former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Sifuna was among several opposition leaders who attended the burial of Alice Wangari Gakuya, the mother of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, in Makomboki, Murang’a County, on Saturday, January 3.

His presence at the function, where Gachagua was also in attendance, has sparked debate among Kenyans, with many questioning his political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sifuna speaking at the funeral

The Nairobi senator later shared photos from the burial, showing him standing with leaders linked to the United Opposition Camp.

He said he had attended the funeral to stand with MP James Gakuya during the difficult moment.

We are in Makomboki, Murang’a County, to condole with our brother Hon James Gakuya as he lays his mother to rest,” Sifuna said.

Fresh Attack on Ruto Government

While addressing mourners, Sifuna did not shy away from politics. He once again criticised President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, saying supporters of ODM leader Raila Odinga are increasingly frustrated.

According to Sifuna, regions that voted for Raila Odinga feel disappointed with the current leadership.

All regions that supported Raila are tired,” he told the gathering, in remarks that drew cheers from some mourners.

Sifuna’s appearance with Gachagua quickly triggered mixed reactions online. Some Kenyans claimed he was slowly drifting away from ODM, while others accused him of working with the opposition against his own party.

A section of social media users warned that his actions could cost him his position in ODM, with some bluntly saying “utatemwa ODM” (you will be kicked out of ODM).

Others, however, defended him, arguing that Sifuna was simply exercising his freedom to associate and speak his mind.

Calls to Discipline Sifuna Grow

The latest development comes just days after Homa Bay Town MP George Kaluma publicly called for disciplinary action against Sifuna.

Kaluma accused the ODM Secretary General of undermining the party’s position on working with the government and urged party leadership to take action against members opposing the broad-based arrangement.

Political Future in Question

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, Sifuna’s recent moves have left many wondering whether he will remain loyal to ODM or chart a new political path.

For now, his Murang’a appearance has added more fuel to the ongoing debate about unity, loyalty, and the future of Kenya’s opposition politics.
