Orengo Breaks Silence After Chaos Disrupts Funeral in Seme

There was tension and political drama in Seme, Kisumu County, after chaos broke out during the burial of Mzee Eliud Nyikal Okaka, the father of Seme Member of Parliament James Nyikal.

The burial ceremony took place at Ridore Primary School and was attended by several political leaders from the region. However, the event was interrupted after two groups reportedly clashed, confusing mourners.

The situation became tense, forcing church leaders to end the service earlier than planned. The clergy directed that the burial should continue immediately without speeches to avoid further chaos.

Siaya Governor James Orengo later spoke about the incident, strongly condemning what happened during the burial.

Orengo thanked the people of Seme for warmly welcoming him during the event despite the tension that was witnessed.

He said it was unfortunate that a peaceful and respectful send-off had been disrupted by political differences.

According to Orengo, the incident was embarrassing and should not have happened during such an important occasion where family and friends had gathered to mourn.

The governor also said that no amount of intimidation or disruption would stop the activities of the Linda Mwananchi Movement.

He insisted that the movement remains strong and focused on fighting for the rights of ordinary Kenyans.

During the chaos, Orengo’s speech was interrupted before he was escorted out of the funeral tent as tensions continued to rise.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o stepped in to calm the crowd and help restore order as emotions among mourners remained high.

Despite the disruption, the burial later continued, although the atmosphere remained tense.

The incident showed the growing political divisions that are now being witnessed even during public and family events.

Several leaders attended the burial, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.

Mzee Eliud Nyikal Okaka died at the age of 104.

After the burial, some leaders shared condolence messages on social media but did not directly comment on the chaos witnessed earlier.

Governor Nyong’o praised the late Mzee as a respected teacher, mentor and community leader who dedicated his life to serving others.

He said Mzee Okaka’s contribution to education and community development will always be remembered.

Governor Gladys Wanga also paid tribute to him, saying he lived an admirable life and left behind strong values of education, leadership and service.

She noted that his legacy can be seen through his children and the many people whose lives he positively impacted.

The burial in Seme will however, be remembered not only as a moment to honour the life of a respected elder, but also for the political tension that briefly overshadowed the solemn occasion.
