Petition Filed to Stop Ruto from Using State House for Partisan Politics

A constitutional petition has been filed at the High Court seeking to stop the use of State House for partisan political activities. The petition argues that using the State House for political party events violates the Constitution and the principles of public accountability.

The case was filed by lawyer Lempaa Suyianka at the Constitutional and Human Rights Division of the High Court in Nairobi. He claims that public resources have been used to promote the interests of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

In the petition, Suyianka has listed the Attorney General, the Comptroller of State House, UDA, and President William Ruto, in his official capacity, as respondents. He is asking the court to order UDA to refund the government for all expenses incurred during political events held at State House.

The petitioner is also seeking a permanent court order to stop all political parties from using State House for meetings, forums, or any other political activities.

According to the court documents, Suyianka argues that State House and State Lodges are national institutions meant only for official government functions. He says they are maintained using public funds approved by Parliament and should not be used for party politics.

The petition follows a series of political gatherings held at State House between April 2025 and February 2026. These events reportedly included meetings with regional political leaders, party forums, and a UDA aspirants’ meeting attended by thousands of party officials and members.

Suyianka claims that the gatherings were purely political and involved party officials, aspirants, and elected leaders acting in their political roles, not as government representatives.

He further argues that State House facilities, staff, security services, catering, and communication systems were used during the events. However, he says there has been no public disclosure about the costs involved or whether UDA compensated the government.
