Teen in Busia Generates Electricity from Human Waste, Powers Homes

In a small village in Matayos, Busia County, an 18-year-old Kenyan innovator is proving that creativity and determination can solve real-life problems. Edwin Wandera has developed a homemade system that generates electricity using human waste, bringing light and power to the neighbourhood.
Despite limited resources and financial challenges, his invention is already transforming lives and attracting admiration from residents who believe his idea could change rural electrification in Kenya if supported.
Edwin Wandera’s Innovation Journey
Edwin’s journey into innovation started from hardship. Two years ago, he faced major challenges, including a lack of school fees and the absence of electricity in his village. Instead of giving up, he turned his interest in physics into a practical solution.
“I loved physics, especially practical lessons. They helped me understand how things work,” Edwin explained.
With no formal training or funding, he began experimenting with locally available materials, determined to create an alternative source of power for his community.
Turning Human Waste into Electricity
Edwin’s system works by combining simple chemical and electrical principles. Using a mixture of oil and acid, he created a setup that produces electrical energy. The system is grounded through an earth wire connected to a pit latrine, where human waste plays a role in the process.
Because of financial constraints, Edwin improvised with materials such as barbed wire instead of aluminium cables to transmit electricity—an example of his creativity and resilience.
At the centre of the project is a locally built transformer, which he says has the potential to supply electricity to many more households if properly developed.
