Wetang’ula’s Brother’s Command Centre Attacked by Suspected Goons

Chaos was reported in Bungoma County on Saturday after a group of suspected goons stormed a campaign command centre linked to Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi.

The incident happened at the Eninga Command Centre located in Makutano area of Kanduyi Constituency. According to reports, the attackers vandalised property and injured some security guards who were stationed at the facility.

Witnesses said the group arrived at the centre and started throwing stones, breaking windows and causing damage. Security officers at the premises attempted to stop the attackers as the situation quickly turned chaotic.

Police officers from Makutano later arrived at the scene to calm the situation and secure the property. Authorities have since launched investigations to establish who organised the attack.

Police said they are working to identify the individuals involved and promised that those responsible will be arrested and charged.

The command centre is associated with Wanyonyi, who has been increasing his political activities in Bungoma as he prepares to contest for the county’s governorship in the 2027 General Election.

At the time of publishing, no suspect had been arrested and the MP had not issued an official statement regarding the attack. Reports indicated that he was attending a fundraising event when the incident occurred.

Wanyonyi currently serves as the MP for Westlands Constituency, a seat he won in the 2022 General Election under the Orange Democratic Movement party.

He is also the brother of Moses Wetang’ula, the leader of FORD–Kenya, a party that has strong political support in Bungoma County.

Last year, many political observers expected Wanyonyi to run for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat. However, in June he announced that he had changed his plans and would instead focus on seeking the Bungoma governor position.

The lawmaker said serving the people of his home county would be a meaningful way to end his long political career.

If he proceeds with the bid, Wanyonyi is expected to face stiff competition from several other politicians interested in the seat. Among them are Didmus Barasa, former Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati, and the county’s Deputy Governor Jenipher Mbatiany, who has also declared interest.
