World’s Richest Woman Opens Medical School Offering Free Tuition to Students

Alice Walton, the world’s richest woman and an heiress to the Walmart fortune, has opened a new medical school in Arkansas, United States, with a mission of improving healthcare in underserved communities.
The institution, known as the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine, will provide free tuition for students in its first five graduating classes. Walton hopes the move will help train more doctors and improve access to quality healthcare.
Unlike traditional medical schools, the new institution focuses on what it calls a “whole-person approach” to treatment. Students will be taught to consider mental health, lifestyle, and overall well-being, instead of only treating diseases after they occur.
The four-year programme also encourages future doctors to take care of themselves while caring for patients. Arts and humanities have been included in the curriculum to help students improve observation skills and develop empathy.
The idea was inspired partly by Walton’s own experience after she was involved in a car accident in Mexico. She has previously said that art and reading helped her during recovery, and believes healthcare and the arts can work together to improve people’s lives.
The school recently welcomed its first group of 48 students, selected from about 2,000 applicants. They have already started learning emergency response skills and have taken part in community service activities, including supporting children, veterans, and survivors of domestic violence.
Walton says her long-term goal is to produce doctors who will serve communities with limited access to healthcare. She hopes the school’s model can eventually be adopted in other areas facing similar challenges.
According to Forbes, Alice Walton has an estimated net worth of more than $100 billion, making her the richest woman in the world.
