Teachers across Kenya will start earning higher salaries from July 1 after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) confirmed a new pay rise.
Speaking during the 49th KESSHA Annual National Conference in Mombasa on Friday, TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi said the government has set aside Ksh8.4 billion to improve teachers’ salaries.
Muturi assured teachers that the money is already available and the salary increase will be implemented from next month.
Apart from the pay rise, TSC also announced plans to promote more than 30,000 teachers in the coming weeks. The commission received another Ksh2 billion from the National Treasury to support the promotions.
The promotions will cover teachers in different job groups, from C2 to D5. According to TSC, promotions will be based on merit, performance, years of service, and the need to help teachers who have remained in one job group for a long time.
In another major announcement, TSC said it has secured funds to employ 24,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms. The move is expected to address concerns that have been raised by teachers in recent months.
At the same event, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba directed the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to produce and distribute learning materials for learners with special needs, including Braille books for visually impaired students.
The announcements come just days after TSC and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) signed a new agreement aimed at making teacher promotions faster and easier.
Under the new system, teachers seeking promotions will go through fewer stages, reducing delays that have affected many teachers for years.
