Homa Bay Rally Turns Chaotic as Goons Attack Opposition Leaders, Journalists

A political rally linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement in Homa Bay County was disrupted after groups of armed youths barricaded roads and attacked opposition leaders, journalists and other people in the area.

The chaos affected movement in and around Homa Bay Central Business District, forcing some opposition leaders to use alternative routes as they tried to reach the rally venues.

Among those caught up in the disruption was Siaya Governor James Orengo, whose convoy came under attack in Ndhiwa.

Homa Bay Tourist Hotel vandalised

The situation had already started escalating on Saturday night when a group of youths reportedly stormed Homa Bay Tourist Hotel.

The hotel was hosting some of the rally organisers and Luo elders. The youths reportedly damaged property at the hotel during the incident.

Journalists attacked

Several journalists covering the political activities were also caught in the violence.

Reporters from Citizen TV, NTV and KTN were reportedly assaulted, with some sustaining injuries to their legs. Their phones and other equipment were also allegedly taken during the attacks.

The incidents disrupted media coverage of the political events in the county.

Police arrest 17 suspects

Police officers were deployed to contain the situation and used tear gas to disperse groups of rioting youths.

At least 17 suspects were arrested in different parts of the region, including Nyandiwa, Magunga and Oyugis.

Police said some of those arrested were found carrying crude weapons such as pangas and knives.

The incidents have raised concerns over the safety of political leaders, journalists and residents during political gatherings in Homa Bay.
