Gachagua Says He Can Be Sifuna’s Running Mate in 2027

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said he is ready to become Edwin Sifuna’s running mate if the opposition settles on the Nairobi senator as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua made the remarks on Sunday, September 6, while speaking to Kenyans in Spokane, Washington, in the United States.
Gachagua backs Sifuna despite age concerns
Gachagua dismissed criticism that Sifuna is too young to run for president.
He pointed to former US presidents Barack Obama and Theodore Roosevelt as examples of leaders who became presidents while still relatively young.
Gachagua said Sifuna, who is 44, should not be discouraged from seeking the country’s top seat because of his age.
He urged young Kenyan leaders to fight for their space in politics instead of waiting for older politicians to give them an opportunity.
Gachagua says opposition will choose the strongest candidate
Gachagua said the opposition has not yet decided who will lead its presidential ticket in 2027.
He named himself, Sifuna and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka among the politicians who could be considered for the position.
According to Gachagua, the opposition is studying its numbers and political support before settling on the candidate who has the best chance of defeating President William Ruto.
He said that if the numbers show Sifuna is the strongest candidate, he would have no problem supporting him as his deputy.
Gachagua also suggested that the possible political arrangement could work in different ways, saying Sifuna could also become his running mate if he is chosen as the presidential candidate.
Gachagua wants one opposition candidate
Gachagua has repeatedly called for the opposition to agree on one presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
He previously said that if he is not selected as the flagbearer, he would be willing to take another senior role in the campaign.
The former deputy president has also accused President Ruto’s allies of using money and sponsored parties to divide opposition support, particularly in the Mt Kenya region.
With the 2027 election still ahead, the opposition is expected to continue negotiations as leaders assess who can build the strongest coalition against Ruto.
