From School Dropout to Founder of Super Metro Sacco

The story of Nelson Mwangi Nduki is a powerful example of determination, resilience, and hard work. From struggling to continue his education to leading one of Nairobi’s most recognized transport Saccos, Mwangi’s journey continues to inspire many young Kenyans.

Today, he serves as the Chairman and Co-founder of Super Metro Sacco, a major player in Nairobi’s public transport sector.

Humble Beginnings in Murang’a

Born and raised in Murang’a County, Nelson Mwangi grew up in a financially struggling family. Life was not easy. In past interviews, he revealed that he walked over 20 kilometres daily just to attend school. At times, even getting food was a challenge.

Despite the hardships, he performed well in his primary school exams, scoring 29 out of 36 marks. However, due to financial constraints, he could not immediately proceed to secondary school and had to repeat a class.

After retaking his exams and scoring 32 out of 36 marks, he secured a chance to join a national school. Unfortunately, his parents could not afford the fees. His grandfather later intervened and appealed to a teacher at Kirogo Secondary School, who allowed him to join.

He eventually completed his secondary education with a Division Two grade (equivalent to a B+). However, his dream of joining university was cut short due to lack of fees, forcing him to drop out.

Risky Move to Nairobi

Determined to change his life, Mwangi made a bold decision to travel to Nairobi in search of opportunities. In a surprising turn of events, he once revealed that he boarded a hearse after a village funeral to reach the city.

Once in Nairobi, he struggled to survive. With help from a relative, he began roasting maize near Makadara Law Courts in Eastlands to earn a living.

In 1993, he secured a job as a lift attendant at Zanze Restaurant while searching for his father in Kangemi. His hard work and commitment saw him rise through the ranks to a managerial position, where he worked for nine years.

Entry Into the Matatu Industry

Mwangi’s breakthrough came in 1998 when he took a loan to add to his savings and purchased his first matatu. This marked his entry into the competitive matatu business.

He later acquired a second vehicle through another loan. In 2002, after helping friends source quality spare parts through thorough research, they rewarded him with an additional matatu — a major boost to his growing fleet.

His influence and reputation in the transport industry steadily expanded.

Birth of Super Metro

In 2013, Mwangi and three friends came together with a shared vision — to bring professionalism and order to Nairobi’s public transport system. This vision led to the formation of Super Metro Sacco.

Under his leadership as Chairman, the Sacco has experienced rapid growth. Today, it boasts a fleet of over 500 buses operating across Nairobi and its environs.

Super Metro has attracted both praise and criticism over the years. However, it remains one of the most recognized and widely used commuter transport Saccos in the city, often seen with long queues of passengers at various stages.

A Story of Persistence

Nelson Mwangi’s journey from a school dropout to the founder of a leading transport Sacco proves that success is not defined by where you start, but by how determined you are to rise.

His story continues to motivate many young entrepreneurs who dream of building something impactful despite humble beginnings.
