Pharmacy Staff in Trouble Over Recording Rigathi Gachagua Without Consent

A Kenyan pharmacist is now in trouble after a viral video showed former Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua purchasing medicine at a local pharmacy.
The clip, which circulated widely on social media on Wednesday, reportedly captured Gachagua during a political tour. The recording is said to have been taken without his consent, triggering public debate and professional scrutiny.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) confirmed that it has opened investigations into the matter. In a statement released on Thursday, February 26, PSK President Wairimu Mbogo strongly condemned the alleged recording, describing it as a serious violation of privacy and professional ethics.
According to Mbogo, all patients — including public figures — are entitled to confidentiality when seeking medical services.

“Recording any client inside a pharmacy without their permission is unacceptable and goes against professional standards,” she stated, adding that the society regrets the apparent breach.
The now-viral footage shows Gachagua standing at a pharmacy counter, apparently purchasing medication. Within hours, the clip had attracted thousands of views online, with mixed reactions from Kenyans.
While some social media users treated the video as a rare, relatable moment of a public figure handling everyday matters, others criticized the act, saying it undermines trust between patients and healthcare providers.
The PSK further noted that the incident highlights the need for stricter adherence to ethical standards within pharmacies across the country. Mbogo emphasized the importance of ensuring that all pharmacy outlets are operated by qualified and licensed professionals who uphold patient confidentiality.
The ongoing investigation could result in disciplinary action against the pharmacist involved, including possible suspension or revocation of their license if found guilty.
