Gachagua to Hold Talks With Uhuru on Opposition’s 2027 Presidential Candidate

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said he will first meet former President Uhuru Kenyatta before the United Opposition decides on its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro home on Saturday, July 11, Gachagua said he is currently carrying out a 45-day consultation across the Mount Kenya region to collect views from residents about the area’s political future.
He said once the consultations are complete, he will share the feedback with Uhuru Kenyatta and seek his advice before making important political decisions.
“I am working together with my elder brother, Uhuru Kenyatta. After completing these consultations, I will meet him so that we can compare notes before making any further decision,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua also maintained that the opposition will field one presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. However, he said there is no need to announce the candidate early.
According to him, naming the candidate too soon could give political rivals enough time to weaken the opposition through divisions. He believes the coalition can wait until closer to the election before unveiling its flag bearer.
His remarks come at a time when some opposition leaders want the candidate announced early to allow enough time for campaigns and coalition building. Others have already expressed support for different leaders, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Gachagua’s planned meeting with Uhuru also points to improving relations between the two leaders after they backed different presidential candidates in the 2022 General Election. Gachagua supported William Ruto, while Uhuru backed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The latest development comes as opposition leaders continue efforts to unite and agree on a single candidate to face President Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
