Government Introduces New System for Downloading and Printing Birth Certificates Online

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a major change that will make it easier for Kenyans to access birth certificates.

Speaking on Monday, June 22, Murkomen said Kenyans can now download and print their birth certificates online without having to visit Huduma Centres or civil registration offices.

The new move aims to make government services faster and more convenient for citizens.

According to the CS, the change is part of ongoing efforts to reduce delays and cut down on the paperwork many Kenyans have faced when seeking important documents.

Previously, Kenyans could only apply for birth certificates through the eCitizen platform, but they were still required to visit civil registry offices to collect the documents.

With the new system, applicants who have already processed their birth certificates will be able to access and print them online from wherever they are, provided they have internet access.

Murkomen announced this after a meeting held at Nyayo House in Nairobi between officials from the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services and other senior government leaders. The meeting reviewed progress in improving service delivery.

He also revealed that the government is working on expanding the eCitizen platform into a one-stop digital portal for various public services to reduce reliance on manual processes.

In addition, the government plans to increase the number of passport application and collection centres across the country. Kilifi County is among the areas expected to benefit from the expansion.

The reforms are part of the government’s plan to modernise public services and improve access to essential documents for millions of Kenyans.

How to Apply for a Birth Certificate Online in Kenya

Kenyans can apply for a birth certificate through the eCitizen platform by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your eCitizen account using your details. If you do not have an account, create one first.
  2. Under the available services, select “Application for Child’s Current Birth Certificate.”
  3. Fill in the required information and upload scanned copies of your national ID and the birth notification document.
  4. Submit the application and pay the required fee using mobile money or any of the available payment methods.
  5. Download and print the application form and payment invoice.
  6. Once the application is processed, applicants can now access and print their birth certificates online without having to visit Huduma Centres or civil registry offices, following the new changes announced by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

The new system is expected to save Kenyans time and reduce the inconvenience previously associated with collecting birth certificates physically.
