Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has slammed the government’s affordable housing programme, saying it does not meet the real needs of people in his county.

Speaking on X, Natembeya said residents of Trans Nzoia are more worried about jobs and livelihoods than housing projects funded through compulsory deductions.

“Sisi watu hapa Trans Nzoia hatutaki mambo ya affordable housing. Tunataka industries zija, ziajiri watoto wetu, watu wajenge nyumba zao wenyewe,” Natembeya said.

The governor argued that creating industries would give people sustainable jobs, allowing them to earn a living and build homes independently, instead of relying on government housing schemes.

He also questioned the logic of the housing levy, especially for workers who are already contributing through deductions but still have to buy houses later. According to Natembeya, this puts an unnecessary burden on salaried workers struggling with the high cost of living.

“Saa hizi watu wanafanya kazi ya serikali wanakatwa pesa ya housing levy, lakini hio nyumba tena unaenda kununua. Umejenga na pesa yetu tena tunaenda kununua. We know exactly what we are doing, we are not stupid,” he added.

Natembeya also raised concerns about the management of public funds. He warned that taxes collected from Kenyans are not personal property for those in power and must be used lawfully and with accountability.

“Ushuru ya Wakenya si personal property utumie vile unataka. It must be used according to the law,” Natembeya said.

Beyond housing, he criticized new government funds whose operations are unclear, including money from the sale of parastatals. He warned that lack of clarity and accountability could lead to misuse of public resources and erode public trust.

“Hii pia wanaita infrastructure fund, hata wabunge hawajua itafanya kazi namna gani. Parastatals zinauzwa pia inaingizwa kwa fund ambayo haiwezi kuwa audited na Auditor General,” Natembeya explained.

Natembeya’s message reflects growing calls from citizens for the government to focus on job creation and transparency, rather than pushing projects that do not directly benefit ordinary Kenyans.
