Mount Kenya UDA MPs Demand Hassan Omar’s Resignation Within 48 Hours

Trouble is growing inside the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) after a group of leaders allied to William Ruto demanded the resignation of Secretary General Hassan Omar over his recent controversial remarks.

The leaders from the Mount Kenya region gave Omar 48 hours to step down from his position. They warned that if he fails to resign, they will push for disciplinary action within the party to remove him.

The leaders were led by Alice Ng’ang’a and John Njuguna Kawanjiku. They accused the UDA Secretary General of making statements that could create division among Kenyans.

In a joint statement, the MPs said Hassan Omar’s apology was not genuine and insisted that he should leave office immediately.

“As leaders, we demand the immediate and unconditional resignation of Hassan Omar as Secretary General of the UDA Party,” the statement read.

The MPs further warned that if Omar does not resign within 48 hours, they will officially petition the party leadership to begin the process of removing him from office.

Hassan Omar came under criticism last week during President Ruto’s tour of the Coast region after remarks that appeared to blame one region for the nationwide matatu strike.

Following public criticism, Omar later issued an apology. However, he also claimed that his comments had been taken out of context by his political opponents.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, May 27, the UDA leaders welcomed the decision by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to investigate the matter.

The leaders urged the commission to fully investigate the remarks and take legal action if necessary.

“We fully support the probe by the NCIC and demand that criminal prosecution for hate speech and incitement be pursued to its conclusion,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have accused President Ruto’s allies of making inflammatory political statements.

Reports also indicate that the push to remove Hassan Omar is linked to political efforts by some Mount Kenya leaders within UDA to strengthen the region’s voting bloc ahead of future elections.

The leaders reportedly believe that controversial remarks from senior party officials could damage those efforts and weaken support in the region.
