Winnie Odinga to Be Made ODM Deputy Party Leader
Makadara MP George Aladwa has proposed that Winnie Odinga, the daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, be appointed as a Deputy Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking on January 3, Aladwa urged ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and Acting Party Leader Oburu Oginga to sit down with party organs and consider the proposal for the sake of party unity.
According to Aladwa, ODM can either allow Winnie to fill a vacant deputy position or create a fourth Deputy Party Leader slot to accommodate her.
“Party leaders should meet at the NEC and agree on the way forward. I have proposed that Winnie Odinga be appointed Deputy Party Leader,” Aladwa said.
He noted that Winnie could step into the leadership gap left after Raila Odinga exited active party roles.

Current ODM Deputy Party Leaders
At the moment, ODM has three Deputy Party Leaders:
-
Abdulswamad Nassir – Mombasa Governor
-
Simba Arati – Kisii Governor
-
Godfrey Osotsi – Vihiga Senator
Leadership Wrangles Worry ODM
Aladwa raised concern over growing tension within ODM’s top leadership, warning that continued infighting could weaken the party, especially in Nairobi politics.
He described the situation as unfortunate, saying that ODM leaders are already divided just months after Raila Odinga’s death.
The MP called for an urgent meeting of ODM organs to restore order and unity in the party.
Winnie Odinga Speaks Out
Winnie Odinga, who is an EALA MP, has recently caused debate within ODM after claiming that some party officials were planning to “sell the party” ahead of the 2027 General Election.
She has also openly questioned the decision to appoint Oburu Oginga as Acting Party Leader, calling for a National Delegates Convention (NDC) to allow party members to decide ODM’s future.
“We need to go back to the people and let them decide who should manage the party,” Winnie said.
Speaking during ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa, Winnie warned leaders seeking control of the party that they must first get legitimacy from ODM members.
Her remarks have sparked debate about whether the Odinga family will remain united politically.
Oburu Odinga Raises Family Concerns
Earlier, Oburu Oginga revealed that he feared disagreements within the family following Raila Odinga’s death.
In a past interview, Oburu said he had raised concerns with Raila about unresolved family matters, including the management of the family estate, warning that they could cause future disputes.
Who Is Currently Leading ODM?
On October 16, ODM officially appointed Oburu Oginga as Acting Party Leader.
Other senior party officials include:
-
Gladys Wanga – National Chairperson
-
Edwin Sifuna – Secretary-General
-
Timothy Bosire – National Treasurer
-
Deputy Party Leaders: Nassir, Arati, and Osotsi
The proposal to appoint Winnie Odinga now adds a new twist to ODM’s leadership debate as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.
